Minimum Roof Pitch for Metal Roofing
How low a metal roof can go depends on the seam, not the metal. Standing-seam systems are allowed down to ¼/12 (1.2°) because the seams sit above the water line, while lapped exposed-fastener panels need 3/12 unless the laps are sealed.
Minimum pitch by system
| Roofing system | Minimum pitch | Conditions | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standing-seam metal panels | ¼/12 (1.2°) | — | IRC R905.10.2 |
| Lapped (exposed-fastener) panels with applied lap sealant | ½/12 (2.4°) | — | IRC R905.10.2 |
| Lapped (exposed-fastener) panels without sealant | 3/12 (14.0°) | — | IRC R905.10.2 |
| Metal roof shingles | 3/12 (14.0°) | — | IRC R905.4.2 |
| Lysaght Klip-Lok 700 Hi-Strength (concealed fix, AU) | 1° (0.21/12) | 0.48 BMT; 0.42 BMT is generally 2° | Lysaght |
| Lysaght Trimdek (trapezoidal, AU) | 2° (0.42/12) | — | Lysaght |
| Lysaght Custom Orb (corrugated, AU) | 5° (1.05/12) | — | Lysaght |
Why seam type sets the minimum
Standing-seam and concealed-fix profiles join panels with raised seams and have no exposed fasteners in the water path, so they tolerate very low slopes. Exposed-fastener and corrugated sheets rely on overlapping ribs and gasketed screws, so they need more fall to keep water moving past every lap.
Australian steel sheet profiles
In Australia the sheet manufacturer sets the minimum. Lysaght publishes 1° for Klip-Lok 700 Hi-Strength in 0.48 BMT (0.42 BMT is generally 2°), 2° for Trimdek and 5° for Custom Orb. Near these limits, check the installation guide for end laps and maximum run lengths, because longer runs carry more water.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum roof pitch for metal roofing?
How low a metal roof can go depends on the seam, not the metal. Standing-seam systems are allowed down to ¼/12 (1.2°) because the seams sit above the water line, while lapped exposed-fastener panels need 3/12 unless the laps are sealed. Full list: Standing-seam metal panels: ¼/12 (1.2°); Lapped (exposed-fastener) panels with applied lap sealant: ½/12 (2.4°); Lapped (exposed-fastener) panels without sealant: 3/12 (14.0°); Metal roof shingles: 3/12 (14.0°); Lysaght Klip-Lok 700 Hi-Strength (concealed fix, AU): 1° (0.21/12); Lysaght Trimdek (trapezoidal, AU): 2° (0.42/12); Lysaght Custom Orb (corrugated, AU): 5° (1.05/12).
Can I use metal roofing below the minimum pitch?
No. Below the minimum the covering is not code-compliant and manufacturers will not warrant it, because water drains too slowly and can be driven under laps. The lowest option on this page is lysaght Klip-Lok 700 Hi-Strength (concealed fix, AU) at 1° (0.21/12); below that, choose a different roofing system from the minimum pitch chart.
