Minimum pitch: 2/12

Minimum Roof Pitch for Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles can be installed on roofs as shallow as 2/12 (9.46°) under the International Residential Code, but anything below 4/12 (18.4°) needs two layers of underlayment because water drains more slowly and wind-driven rain can back up under the tabs.

What changes between 2/12 and 4/12

On a low-slope shingle roof (2/12 up to but not including 4/12) the underlayment is installed as two layers: a 19-inch starter strip along the eave, then 36-inch-wide sheets lapped 19 inches. That doubled layer is what keeps water out when it lingers on the roof.

Below 2/12 asphalt shingles are not permitted at all. Use a membrane (TPO, EPDM or modified bitumen), standing-seam metal or mineral-surfaced roll roofing instead.

Ice barriers in cold climates

Where the local code calls for an ice barrier, it must run from the eave edge to a point at least 24 inches inside the exterior wall line of the building, whatever the pitch (IRC R905.1.2). Low-slope roofs are the most vulnerable to ice dams, so most roofers extend the barrier further on shallow pitches.

Canada and manufacturer requirements

Canadian building codes and shingle manufacturers set similar low-slope limits and underlayment rules. Manufacturer instructions are part of your warranty, so check the product wrapper or installation guide before shingling anything below 4/12.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum roof pitch for asphalt shingles?

Asphalt shingles can be installed on roofs as shallow as 2/12 (9.46°) under the International Residential Code, but anything below 4/12 (18.4°) needs two layers of underlayment because water drains more slowly and wind-driven rain can back up under the tabs. Full list: Asphalt shingles, standard application: 4/12 (18.4°); Asphalt shingles, low-slope application: 2/12 (9.5°).

Can I use asphalt shingles below the minimum pitch?

No. Below the minimum the covering is not code-compliant and manufacturers will not warrant it, because water drains too slowly and can be driven under laps. The lowest option on this page is asphalt shingles, low-slope application at 2/12 (9.5°); below that, choose a different roofing system from the minimum pitch chart.
