Why wood needs a steeper roof

Wood shakes and shingles are lapped in courses with open keyways between pieces, and the wood has to dry out between rains. A steeper pitch sheds water faster, reduces moss and rot, and lets the roof last longer. On lower pitches, manufacturers usually reduce the exposure (more overlap) to compensate.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum roof pitch for wood shakes & shingles?

Wood shingles and wood shakes are both allowed from 3/12 (14.0°) on houses under the International Residential Code. Commercial buildings built to the International Building Code need 4/12 for shakes. Full list: Wood shingles (IRC): 3/12 (14.0°); Wood shakes (IRC): 3/12 (14.0°); Wood shakes (IBC, commercial): 4/12 (18.4°).

Can I use wood shakes & shingles below the minimum pitch?

No. Below the minimum the covering is not code-compliant and manufacturers will not warrant it, because water drains too slowly and can be driven under laps. The lowest option on this page is wood shingles (IRC) at 3/12 (14.0°); below that, choose a different roofing system from the minimum pitch chart.
